Storm Bay Observing System

Project No: FRDC 2018/131

When the salmon industry moves into new environments it is important that adequate environmental monitoring is undertaken to understand interactions between salmon farming and the environment. The focus of this project was to follow the expansion of the Tasmanian salmon industry into Storm Bay with a comprehensive environmental monitoring program in support of the ongoing monitoring and management of salmon farming in this area. Three aims were considered in the design of this monitoring program: assessing the ecological health of the major receiving habitats, assessing whether performance criteria have been exceeded, and detecting and assessing the impacts of salmon farm inputs.

Following four years of data collection across key habitats in Storm Bay, comprehensive recommendations were made on the design of the Storm Bay monitoring program going forward.
