Developing an environmental monitoring program for Storm Bay

Our team at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) is currently involved in a large FRDC project (‘Storm Bay Observing System’) designed to assess the environmental performance of salmon aquaculture in Storm Bay. Through this project we are monitoring the interactions between salmon farms and the whole ecosystem, including soft sediment, inshore reefs, deep reefs, seagrass and the water column.

This FRDC project will improve understanding of the interactions between farming and the environment, enabling appropriate management practices and ensuring that expansion is conducted around evidence-based performance of the marine environment.

Our recent report  by Strain et al (2020) provides an overview of the environmental monitoring being undertaken in Storm Bay and explains its purpose in the context of salmon farming interactions with the environment.
