Our IMAS Salmon Environmental Interactions Team has taken out the prestigious University of Tasmania Medal for Research Excellence, in recognition of their science on the effects of salmon farming in our coastal zone.
The award honours the outstanding contribution Dr Jeff Ross, Associate Professor Catriona Macleod and their dedicated team have made to ensuring the research that underpins our understanding and monitoring of the environmental interactions of salmon farming is of the highest quality, across the spectrum of innovation and impact, mentoring and early-career researcher development, and community engagement.
Dr Ross said the team showed an outstanding commitment, both to Tasmania’s natural environment and to generating the understanding needed to support the sustainable development of the salmon industry.
“Our work has contributed to better balancing the protection of natural values of our coastal environment, with the social and economic benefits from the industry. This benefits society and the communities we are such a part of – and informs government and industry management,” Dr Ross said.
“It can be a challenging space to work in, but we are proud of the strong independent voice our team provides to government, industry and the community – advice that has driven real change in farm management and environmental regulation.”
Associate Professor MacLeod agrees. “Our team is driving real and positive change. The research has really improved our understanding of the interactions, risks and challenges in coastal management, and we are committed to creating solutions over time.”
