The Tasmania’s Marine Atlas (the ‘Atlas’) is an accessible web mapping platform that highlights the diversity, value and uses of Tasmania’s coast and ocean. It makes spatiotemporal information and meta-information relevant to marine planning, management and decision-making available to end-users, including researchers, government, industry, non-governmental organizations, and anyone with an interest in the Tasmanian marine environment. The Atlas collates available information by connecting to curated databases using web-mapping services, and also includes information natively hosted at IMAS.
The Atlas is meant to facilitate broad access to relevant information, promote a holistic and inclusive approach to the sustainable use of marine resources, and support transparency in decision-making. In addition to the web-mapping platform, the Atlas contains features promoting ocean literacy designed to make complex marine topics more accessible to non-experts.
